Centenary Tree Planting Programme Launched
We are delighted to announce the launch of our Centenary Tree Planting Programme, celebrating a century of dedicated work to preserve the landscapes of the Peak District and South Yorkshire.
To celebrate the Centenary milestone, the countryside charity will plant 100 trees in the beautiful moorlands that surround Sheffield – that’s one tree for every year CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire has worked to preserve and enhance the countryside.
The charity will collaborate with the Eastern Moors Partnership to plant native trees and bushes across various locations on the Eastern Moors, an area that the charity was involved in from its outset with Ethel Haythornthwaite campaigning to protect the moors from plans to build swathes of houses over the ‘breathing spaces’ of Sheffield.
Tomo Tompson, CPRE PDSY CEO tells us more “As we celebrate a century of countryside care, we honour Ethel Haythornthwaite’s steadfast dedication to preserving the natural beauty of our landscapes. Ethel viewed the countryside as a sanctuary, a place of tranquillity and beauty, which should be enjoyed by everyone.
Throughout her own life, she often found solace on the eastern side of the National Park close to the Outdoor City, where she was born. She devoted her life to protecting the Peak District from unsuitable development, ensuring that everyone could continue to enjoy the positive mental health and wellbeing benefits of the countryside. The impact of her legacy has influenced many of the local landscapes we cherish today, so our Centenary Tree Planting Programme is a tribute to her vision of preserving and enhancing the countryside for future generations.”
This latest initiative is part of CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire ongoing work to promote the planting of more trees and hedgerows addressing one of the biggest threats to our countryside and planet – the climate emergency. Planting season runs until March and once complete, the new trees will help restore vital habitats and improve biodiversity.
For a century, CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire has proudly safeguarded the landscapes of the Peak District and South Yorkshire, advocating for a countryside that enriches our lives and rejuvenates our wellbeing. Now, it is our turn to regenerate and protect our local landscapes, ensuring they continue to thrive for generations to come.
